A passenger shipping vessel is drifting in open waters after leaving Savusavu at about 2 o’clock this morning.

fijivillage News received a call from a concerned woman whose father and children are travelling on the passenger vessel.

She says she was told that they have been drifting for about 4 hours, and in the past hour, a barge is trying to tow them to Savusavu. However this has been unsuccessful so far.

Assistant Police Commissioner Operations, ACP Livai Driu says he can confirm that the ship is without power.

Driu says the ship left Savusavu late last night to come to Suva.

He says they are still trying to contact the crew.

Driu says they are also trying to figure out the exact location of the ship before making other decisions.

We are currently trying to contact the vessel owner. They are not answering any phone calls.

Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is yet to comment.
