Painting is more than art – it’s the key to supporting my family and empowering Fiji’s youth - Eastgate

40-year-old Jack Eastgate is not just a painter; he is a visionary dedicated to empowering Fiji’s youth through art.

Since starting his artistic journey in 2009, Eastgate has turned his passion into a mission to inspire young minds and transform the creative landscape of the country.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Eastgate says at the moment, he is the sole breadwinner for his family.

He says his wife is a talented artist as well but they are still figuring out the logistics since she is American.

He further says they have a four-year-old and life has been tough but painting has allowed him to support his family and keep pushing forward.

He says after spending 20 years in California, he came to Fiji with a dream to make art more accessible and valued.

He says painting is his passion and this work supports his family and allows him to give back to the community.

Eastgate says nobody has to be a full-time artist to appreciate art.

He says painting is about personal growth, healing and even sending important messages.

Eastegate says his journey has not been without challenges such as navigating Fiji’s tax system and sourcing materials.

He further says he funds his work largely through private sponsorship and commissions and hopes to one day establish an arts university to train and employ young artists.

Eastegate says his artwork is displayed all over Fiji, from Mana Cafe and Tappoos to local hotels and Nailuva Road.

He says his vision includes turning Suva into the arts capital of the South Pacific, collaborating with government agencies and creating more public murals.

The 40-year-old says art can brighten someone’s day, foster civic pride and serve as an outlet for mental health.

He says his dedication is not only beautifying Fiji but also inspiring its youth to embrace their creativity, make mistakes, and learn from them.

His message to young people is to keep going and not to be afraid to explore their feelings through art.
