Like many other Pacific Island countries, Fiji experiences high rate of Non Communicable Diseases causing premature mortality and negatively affecting economic development and productivity.
Nasinu Town Council’s Special Administrator, Mosese Kama made this comment while launching the Package of Essential NCD program at the Makoi Health Centre this morning.
Kama said Package of Essential Non Communicable Disease Intervention is defined as a minimum set of cost effective interventions for primary care facilities providing integrated prevention and management of NCDs based on simple and evidence based clinical protocol and risk assessment tools.
He said according to a survey done in 2009, 82% of deaths in Fiji are due to NCDs.
Kama added non communicable diseases specifically heart disease is the number one killer in Fiji in the last five years while premature deaths, NCDs and in particular diabetes and stroke lead to huge strains on the health system and the economy generally.
Kama added people can avoid these diseases by avoiding smoking, eating nutritious and healthy diet, avoiding alcohol and engaging in physical activity programs.
