Media outlets, social media users, and the public have been reminded by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that misleading or inflammatory content undermines the justice process and may amount to contempt of court.

Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva has also noted that a stern warning has been issued to ODPP staff against commenting on ongoing cases online.

Tikoisuva says the ODPP has raised concerns over the rise of sensationalized and irresponsible online commentary targeting witnesses in ongoing criminal cases.

She stresses that witnesses must be respected and protected from intimidation, as attacks on them can discourage others from testifying.

Tikoisuva adds that while upholding freedom of expression, the ODPP emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, fair trials, and the presumption of innocence.
