The number of marijuana plants uprooted in Kadavu has dropped significantly from 45,000 to just 5,000 in the past six months — a major decrease highlighted by Kadavu Provincial Council Chairman, Sikeli Vuniwaqa.

Police reports indicate a reduction in the number of plants being uprooted with Vuniwaqa saying that this drop reflects growing collaboration between the police and the people.

Vuniwaqa also highlighted that the decreasing trend in drug activity in Kadavu gives hope to the Vanua that change is possible for those involved in such illegal activities.

He adds that village chiefs are unable to remove individuals found in possession of drugs, as this would go against laws that limit traditional authority in such cases.
