No major recovery of fentanyl has been recorded in Fiji, however, this remains on the Fiji Revenue Customs Service radar as it has been proliferating through various parts of the Pacific.
FRCS CEO, Udit Singh has confirmed this and says that fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be manufactured in a laboratory from the precursor.
Singh says that some of the core drugs are methamphetamine and cocaine.
He says they have ramped up their efforts with key agencies including the Fiji Police Force, the Navy, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and other partners to ensure a united front in protecting borders — on land, at sea, and through air surveillance and freight monitoring systems.
He further says fentanyl can be up to 100 times as potent as morphine and can be found in powder, tablets, nasal spray and blotter paper forms.
The CEO adds that they will continue to monitor with other agencies regarding this drug.
