No income threshold for free water tank scheme

Residents around the country who often face water disruptions and low water pressure are encouraged to apply for the Free Water Tank and Rain Water Harvesting Scheme.

Water Authority of Fiji CEO Opetaia Ravai says that the Rain Water Harvesting and Free Water Tank Schemes are open to everybody with the main aim to harvest rainwater as much as possible, to assist all Fijians to have access to water.

Fijivillage asked why there is no income threshold for this scheme.

Ravai says that unlike the Free Water Scheme, no income threshold has been pegged to the programme as the Free Water Scheme was specifically designed to bring some financial relief to low income earners who are metered customers receiving water from the WAF reticulation system.

He adds that majority of individuals and communities accessing the Free Water Tanks and the Rainwater Harvesting Programmes are rural dwellers and lower income earners.

Ravai has also revealed that so far they have distributed a total of 382 water tanks to the different divisions.

He says that they have approved a total of 782 water tank applications  to date and they are ready to be delivered.

He adds that Water Authority of Fiji and  Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development officials are carrying out the verifications of applicants.

He stresses that once applications have been vetted, they will arrange for verification on site.

The requirements to have a water tank is that there should be a strong stand for the water tank and proper guttering in place.

Ravai says they will not give out the water tanks until the requirements are met.

The Fijian Government has allocated $1.3million for the Free Water Tank Scheme.
