Commissioner of Police, Ben Groenewald

There is no criminal case registered within the Fiji Police Force against the former Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase which would warrant his arrest upon his return.

That is the confirmation from the Commissioner of Police, Ben Groenewald after a number of issues were brought to his attention.

Groenewald said he would like to clear the air on a statement issued by the Social Democratic Liberal Party relating to reports of Qarase.

Meanwhile, on the issue of comments made by the former Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, Commissioner Groenewald said he can confirm he has received the audio and he will be making a comment on whether there is a need for FICAC to proceed with an investigation.

Commissioner Groenewald said as stipulated in the Electoral decree this year, the Fiji Police Force will conduct initial investigations before the cases are referred to FICAC.

He is also requesting to all Fijians to exercise discretion and be mindful of their actions during this time and follow the rule of law.

The Police chief is pleading with members of the public not to spread misinformation about the 45 soldiers who are still held captive in Syria.

However he said let us unite in praying for their safe return and refrain from speculation which is of no comfort for their families and loved ones.
