With the rising prices of several goods, the Interim Finance Minister said there are no plans to make Cost of Living Adjustment payments for civil servants this year.
Mahendra Chaudhry agrees that the plight of the poorly paid workers needs to be taken into account.
But Chaudhry stresses that the interim government needs to stabilize the state finances and a general COLA payout is out of the question.
The Interim Finance Minister also believes that a general pay rise could add to the rising inflation rate.
Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama in a press statement has said that the Interim Administration is doing all it can to ensure that the rise in food prices are contained and that ordinary members of the public are protected.
Commodore Bainimarama said due to the changing weather patterns we cannot escape the impact of the rise in wheat and wheat related prices.
