The Interim Attorney General stresses that no new laws are being proposed through the Media Promulgation.
After the Fiji Media Council met this afternoon to discuss the proposed promulgation, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum reiterated that there are no intentions to restrict media freedom in anyway.
However, Sayed Khaiyum said there are some contentious matters that need to be looked into. The Interim AG highlights that under the current laws, if a person lodges a complaint with the Fiji Media Council, then they cannot go to the High Court for redress.
Media Council Chairman Darly Tart said they are confident they will be consulted on the matter and they will await developments before deciding their next step.
The proposed Media Promulgation will see all existing laws pertaining to the Media, its freedom and restrictions professional standards and code of ethics incorporated into it with the establishment of an independent tribunal and will be an avenue where people will be able to appeal the Fiji Media Council's decision on complaints.
