The Water Authority of Fiji has made it clear that residents living along the Suva-Nausori corridor may either get water supply 2 hours a day or 2 days in a week if the authority does not have additional water sources within the next 5 years.
Water Authority CEO Opetaia Ravai made this statement during the Public Accounts Committee meeting.
Ravai says if they do not secure the Rewa and Viria rivers as additional sources of water supply, the Suva to Nausori corridor will face the serious issue.
He confirms that the Authority has presented a report on this problem to the government and the Asian Development Bank to fund this project.
The Water Authority CEO says that they have done a demand analysis in the Suva to Nausori corridor and they have found that the population growth is at an alarming rate therefore the Authority cannot supply based on the demand.
Ravai also says that they are working on a program to address the issue of low water pressure around the country.
He says that they know that residents especially in the Suva to Nausori and Lautoka to Nadi corridor face intermittent supply and low water pressure.
Ravai also says that there were 8 areas where they cannot supply water 24 hours a day and these include some parts in Ba, Kikau Street in Samabula and some parts in Rewa.
He says they are also looking at additional water sources for the Nadi to Lautoka corridor.
The CEO highlights that the Authority is having discussions with the landowners in Teidamu and Vakabuli.
He adds that there are a lot of water sources in Ba and they are utilising them efficiently while they are also trying to secure a water source in Bulileka, Labasa.
Ravai says that they are talking to landowners to secure a water source at Matani Hill.
He says they are using Qawa and Labasa rivers as their main source in Labasa.
