Nakorokula villagers plant trees and mangroves to tackle climate change

To combat climate change and restore biodiversity by providing food security, the villagers of Nakorokula in Ra have taken the initiative to plant mangroves, vetiver grass, sandalwood and lemon trees in their community.

While speaking to fijivillage news, a representative from the village says this initiative has contributed to the reformation of their seashore which has eroded and is now becoming a concern.

He says villagers are also earning from planting mangrove seedlings that are to be transplanted in villages from Nadroga to Sigatoka.

The villager further says Fijians must take care of the environment because it is a source of livelihood and generations to come will benefit from our actions today.

He says they are also planting these trees to support the government’s initiative of planting 30 million trees in 15 years.

The villagers also acknowledged the support of the government for this initiative.
