More than 50 farmers attended the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council Mushroom Production workshop in Nadi, to help improve income, food and nutrition and livelihoods of farmers, both new and established including youths and women.

The workshop was organised by the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, and was supported by the European Union, International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Farmers Organisation for African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries and the Pacific Islands Farmers Organisation.

Fiji Crop and Livestock Council CEO Jiu Daunivalu said the workshop was an introduction to mushroom farming for most of those who attended, to understand the basics of cultivating mushrooms.

Daunivalu says the workshop provided them with the right knowledge and skills in the Oyster mushroom cultivation practice, understanding other varieties and medicinal and nutritional value, cooking practice, and Giant JUNCAO Grass planting and sterilization.

She adds this enables the 50 new mushroom farmers to access information and technical advisory support services from the Ministry of Agriculture and China JUNCAO Demonstration Centre, at Legalega Nadi.
