More people in evacuation centres

The total number of people living in evacuation centres in the central division has increased to 1,315.

The National Disaster Management Office says there are 41 evacuation centres still active in the central division.

Flood waters still remain in some parts of the Nausori area which is now receding.

Residents are now cleaning up as the sun is out in most parts of the country.

Expect more details on these areas later this afternoon.

In the western division, a major clean up continues in Rakiraki town after flooding in recent days.

Divisional Planning Officer West, Sitiveni Tavaga says a number of shops are still closed in Rakiraki town and personnel from the Rakiraki town council as well as National Fire Authority are helping with the clean up.

Tavaga says at least 200 evacuation centres occupied by 1,644 people are still open in the Western division.

Meanwhile, a flood warning is still force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Lau group and low-lying areas adjacent and downstream of the Rewa river.

There is also a flood alert for low lying areas downstream of the Wainibuka river and Rakiraki town.

The water level at the Rewa river was 5.49 metres at 10am which is 0.99 metres above warning level and decreasing.

The water level at Rakiraki station was 1.95 metres at 10am which is 0.05 metres below warning level and decreasing.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Vanua levu, Taveuni and Lau group.

Please note that high tide will be at 1.36pm.

The tropical depression was located 220 kilometres southwest of Kadavu at 7am.

The weather office says it has a very low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over Fiji Waters.
