The mobile phone war is now officially on and the main beneficiaries of this battle will be the people of the country, with intense competition expected to kick off this morning.
A major issue which has already been addressed ahead of the official Digicel Fiji launch today is that they have managed to secure an inter-connectivity agreement with Vodafone Fiji.
Vodafone Fiji Managing Director Aslam Khan said they welcome Digicel Fiji into the market and the clear indication that the people of country will have the best service has been reflected by Vodafone Fiji and Digicel Fiji having an inter-connectivity agreement from midnight last night.
Khan told us yesterday afternoon that they were expected to reach an agreement last night which will see Digicel phone users able to call people who are using Vodafone and vice versa.
Competition is definitely driving the prices of mobile phones down from today and competitive call rates are also being offered to the people of Fiji.
While some telecommunication service providers had earlier said that Digicel should follow the call and texting rates set by the Commerce Commission, Digicel said they will try to give the best rates to the people.
When Fijivillage questioned Digicel's Pacific CEO Vanessa Slowey whether they will go lower than the call rates set by the Commerce Commission, she said the market is open and they will have open competition.
Slowey also said they are known as the monopoly breakers and they are confident about their product.
Digicel Marketing Director Pacific Niamh Byrne confirmed that the off peak rate for Digicel to Digicel calls will be 30 cents a minute while the peak rate will be 40 cents a minute.
On the other hand, while speaking to our News Director Vijay Narayan in an exclusive interview, Vodafone Fiji Managing Director Aslam Khan has revealed that they want the price control order to be lifted as it is now time for open competition.
Khan also said competition has arrived and rates are already going down.
However, a very confident Khan said he expected Digicel to offer much lower rates as they enter the Fiji market.
Digicel's Pacific CEO Vanessa Slowey said people will save up to 27 percent on the Digicel network, 25 percent on text messaging, up to 27 percent on international calls and 26 percent to fixed lines, and they will also have per second billing.
