Ministry of Agriculture corrects earlier statement and clarifies that careFIJI app does not send out alerts

The Ministry of Agriculture has corrected its earlier statement regarding the careFIJI app and has clarified the app does not send out alerts as per their earlier statement.

It says the app is designed to assist the Ministry of Health and Medical Services speed up its manual contact tracing efforts and help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Ministry says the careFIJI app uses Bluetooth Low-Energy technology, which is a non-location tracking technology to exchange contact tracing information with other careFIJI users.

Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Mahendra Reddy in an earlier statement had said that if one has the app on the mobile phone, then the phone will beep to alert the person that someone with COVID-19 is approaching.

Dr. Reddy had said it is important that people download the careFIJI app to ensure they are safe from COVID-19.

Dr Reddy had further stated that downloading the app was the most important step towards re-opening Fiji’s borders to revive the country’s tourism industry.
