Captaining the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s side was far from Jeremaia Matana’s thoughts, but when he was named by coach Osea Kolinisau to lead the team over the weekend in the HSBC Dubai 7s, the 26-year-old could only pinch himself and accept the huge task being handed to him.

Matana says he was thankful to Kolinisau for having faith in him and trusting in his capabilities to captain the team.

Matana is the first captain since Kolinisau to win the Dubai 7s again after 9 long years.

He says before they headed into the final against Spain, he kept stressing one thing to the team and that is not to underestimate their opponent because Spain is an unpredictable side and they had a great run to the final.

Fiji finally broke their 22-tournament losing streak after that win in Dubai this morning.

They have been drawn in Pool A for the Cape Town 7s this weekend alongside Uruguay and Great Britain.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side is in Pool D alongside Great Britain and the USA.

The Cape Town 7s will kick off this Saturday.
