Man sentenced to 14 years and 8 months imprisonment for raping granddaughter

Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Sunil Sharma has sentenced a man to 14 years and 8 months imprisonment for raping his granddaughter in Sigatoka.

The man raped the girl between the 1st day of January, 2012 and 31st day of December, 2012.

The court heard during the time of the incident the accused was 70 years old and the victim was 16 years old.

While sentencing the man, Justice Sharma told the man that he committed a serious offence against his granddaughter who was alone, unsuspecting and vulnerable and whose house the man used to frequent on a regular basis.

He told the man that at his advanced age he was supposed to be a role model but this was not to be due to his lust and sexual gratification adding this conduct on the victim is unthinkable and deplorable and a long term imprisonment is the only answer.

Justice Sharma told the man that his advanced age is not a factor which will be viewed favourably, adding the man should have known better that offenders cannot hide behind their age to receive a lenient sentence.

A non-parole period of 11 years has been set.
