A sea of blue and white could be seen across many main centres around the country today as people gather to celebrate Fiji Day in their own special way.
40 years ago on the 10th of October, 1970, Prince Charles who represented Queen Elizabeth officially handed over power and control to the people of Fiji which was received by Fiji=s first Prime Minister, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Following this, the Fiji flag was raised for the first time ever.
That was the day when Fiji gained independence and the people had control of mapping out a future of this nation. Over the years we have had our ups and downs, but one thing that will certainly never change for any Fijian is that this is our homeland.
In the Independence Day celebrations in 1970, people from all communities performed in front of thousands of people, showcasing the diverse culture in the country.
While delivering his message on that day, Prince Charles also thanked everyone for the welcome that the Indian community had given him. He said he was told that it is a departure from tradition for a welcome of this kind to be combined with a Fijian ceremony.
Prince Charles went on to say that this is a true indication of the future potential of this multi racial society.
40 years on, the question is whether everyone will unite under the noble banner blue and march together towards a better future.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said everyone should ensure that Fiji has changes that will bring people together.
He said people should also think about the years to come rather than just focusing on today or tomorrow.
He said politics has brought about some downfalls over the past years, starting from the 1987 coup.
Commodore Bainimarama said practical applications are needed to ensure that the country achieves its aim to have a fair, just and inclusive nation.

Hopes are now high that everyone stands united and moves together as one nation to have a better future for everyone, irrespective of the differences, challenges, their race or religion.
Many have said that this can only be achieved if everyone plays their part as a citizen of Fiji.
