Major players gather to discuss future landscape for IT industry in Fiji

As the world is in a technological renaissance, major key players including Google, Starlink and Telecom have gathered with Fiji National University to discuss the future landscape of the Information Technology industry.

While officiating at the 5th National Conference on Information Technology at the Pearl Resort this morning, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica says IT is influencing every aspect of our professional and personal lives.

Kamikamica says it is essential to remember that technology is not an end in itself, meaning to achieve greater efficiency, equity, and sustainability in societies.

He says the pace of technological change demands that we not only keep up but anticipate and prepare for the next wave of innovations.

Kamikamica says Fiji which was never connected to the communications infrastructure, now have the option of using Starlink Satellite Broadband technology to connect to the world.

Kamikamica says the Government is working to ensure that Fiji has the right environment and resources available for revolutionary innovation and sustainable development.

He adds the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision till 2050 also focus on Area 4 which is Catalysing Economic Growth and Diversifying the Economy, particularly focusing on Information and Communication Technology as well as Research, Development and Innovation.

Meanwhile, Fiji National University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Doctor Isimeli Tagicakiverata says the discussions, insights and ideas during the conference will unfold the future of IT.

Tagicakiverata says FNU’s initiative offering cutting-edge courses and promoting research innovation has played a vital role in ensuring students are well-equipped for the future.

He says operational actions alone are not enough but revolutionary innovation sparks interest and creative ideas that dares to push the boundaries.

The theme of the conference is "Fostering Operational Excellence through Revolutionary Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Governance.
