Levuka residents experience low water flow due to water rationing

People living in Levuka should prepare themselves and store water as water rationing will be conducted on the island after the Levuka Water System started experiencing low raw water flow from its three main water sources namely; Totogo, Levuka-vaka-Viti and Waitovu.

The Water Authority of Fiji says this is a result of the below-average rainfall experienced in the dam catchment and current prolonged dry weather affecting the country.

They say the reduction in raw water flows from the dam has impacted the water production efforts and subsequent impacts on the treated water levels at the reservoir, affecting people within the Levuka System.

The WAF Hydrology team is actively monitoring the situation to alleviate it and temporarily support the water production capability.

WAF says they will be carrying out valve operations from early morning to afternoon everyday to ration the supply to the people.

The valve operations will allow WAF to recover adequate water levels at the dam and water production during the off-peak hours of the night and have sufficient storage levels to meet the peak day demand, ensuring a fair share of water to customers.

They are requesting people to use water sparingly and invest in storage containers or water tanks connected to the water system for storage and backup water supply.
