LTA warns on jaywalking related deaths

The Land Transport Authority has revealed that this year so far four pedestrians lost their lives because they were at fault.

LTA CEO Naisa Tuinaceva said this year five pedestrians have died on our roads whereas a total of 21 pedestrians died last year.

A man died on the road on Tuesday in Suva because he suddenly crossed from in front of the bus.

Tuinaceva said this is a typical attitude seen in our people and is very dangerous.

He said majority of the pedestrians ignore the traffic lights and cross when it pleases them which are commonly known as jaywalking.

He added this is simple negligence on the pedestrian’s part and it must be noted that the drivers are not at fault always.

The Authority has mounted a campaign specifically focused on pedestrians from the start of this year where teams go out on the road educating people on how to and when to cross the road.

Meanwhile, the road death toll is 12 compared to 22 for the same period last year.
