Kunawave remanded in custody for alleged murder of 4-month-old daughter

The 26-year-old father who is charged with murdering his 4 month old baby has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Tevita Kunawave appeared before Magistrate Waleen George who has transferred the case to the Suva High Court.

Magistrate George told Kunawave that murder is a serious offence and it cannot be heard in the Magistrates Court and that is why she has transferred the matter to the High Court.

Kunawave who said that he works for the RFMF wanted to represent himself, but was told by Magistrate George that when the case will be heard in the High Court, there will be no Police Prosecutors to fight the case against him but lawyers from Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Kunawave then requested for Legal Aid assistance.

Magistrate George says the bail application will be determined in the High Court.

A domestic violence restraining order has been issued by Magistrate George to ensure the safety of the wife and children.

The 4-month-old baby passed away after she was allegedly caught in the middle of a dispute between her parents.

Kunawave allegedly returned home heavily intoxicated and was refused entry into their home by his wife.

He got hold of a concrete block and allegedly threw it towards his wife which unfortunately hit their 4-month old daughter.

The victim was rushed to the CWM Hospital but was pronounced dead.
