Ketan Lal calls out decision to purchase new “Presidential” SUV for Chief Justice

Ketan Lal calls out decision to purchase new “Presidential” SUV for Chief Justice

Opposition MP Ketan Lal

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has questioned the Judicial Department’s decision to purchase a new “Presidential” SUV for the Chief Justice, along with two additional executive SUVs for Supreme Court judges at a time when the nation is grappling with an escalating cost of living, widespread financial hardship, and unsustainable levels of public debt.

Lal says to now allocate further resources for luxury transportation in the current economic climate is not only tone-deaf, but deeply inconsiderate of the sacrifices ordinary Fijians are being forced to make every day.

Lal says this raises serious questions about priorities, accountability, and public trust.

He says the Chief Justice already has access to official vehicles and security detail, befitting the dignity of his office.

The Opposition Member says what is equally disturbing is the Prime Minister’s silence amid serious public allegations currently surrounding the Chief Justice.

He says while transparency and accountability are expected of all arms of government, it appears those expectations are not being upheld in this case.

We have also contacted the Chief Registrar and are awaiting his response.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has already stated that he does not make decisions regarding the judges.
