Kadavu turns to traditional leadership to fight drug crisis

The province of Kadavu is strengthening its traditional leadership structures in an effort to reduce rising crime, particularly the cultivation and use of marijuana.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Chairman of the Kadavu Provincial Council Sikeli Vuniwaqa says that although police reports show a slight drop in criminal activity, the province remains concerned—and committed to long-term change.

Vuniwaqa says village chiefs are often limited in their ability to act, as current laws restrict traditional authority from removing individuals found with drugs.

However, he says the recent filling of 85 percent of chiefly titles in Kadavu is a major step forward, helping the Vanua reinforce communal discipline and values.

He adds that revitalizing traditional systems and leadership roles is key to reshaping attitudes and restoring order in communities affected by the drug trade.
