Technology facilitated gender based violence such as revenge porn is increasing and common in Fiji and has become an alarming issue for the Online Safety Commission as they mostly receive domestic issues.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan, Commission’s Acting Commissioner Tajeshwari Devi says revenge porn is very common and increasing and there are cases where partners in long distance relationships share intimate photos and videos and if there is an issue or they part ways, one decides to threaten the other partner.

She says this is also alarming because it is not coming from a stranger but from within the house or family where the perpetrator is known to the victim.

Devi also says individuals post photos of other people where they post the victim’s number and say they are available for sex and the victims only find out when they start receiving calls.

She says there are also certain groups on social media that have a lot of advertisements sharing details on that and these are private platforms that have no control because if they get one removed, there will be others created.
