Increase by 43% in drowning cases recorded in 2022

People are being urged to look after their children especially in the rainy weather as an increase of 43 percent in the number of drowning cases was recorded last year compared to 2021.

Police have so far reported 5 drowning incidents this year.

They say a total of 53 people drowned last year compared to 37 in 2021.

Police say children aged between two to ten-years-old had a higher drowning rate.

7 toddlers, and 4 children between the ages of 4 to 10-years-old drowned last year.

They say most drowning in children from ages two to ten-years-old happened in nearby creeks, rivers, dug up water pools and swimming pools.

Adults aged between 18 to 24-years-old have the highest drowning rate while nearly 85 percent of people who drowned last year were males.

28 people drowned in the West last year, 9 in the Southern Division, 9 in the Eastern and 7 in the Northern Division.
