Immediately stop making changes to exams and curriculum – Agni Deo Singh

Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary Agni Deo Singh

Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary Agni Deo Singh is calling on the Minister for Education, Premila Kumar to immediately stop making changes to the exams and curriculum for primary and secondary schools.

Singh says instead, Kumar should establish an education commission which will be able provide a clear pathway and direction for education for the next decade.

Singh says making ad-hoc changes to education has become a norm for the current government.

He adds they have seen that changes have not been done in a holistic manner in the last 15 years and they have been asking for an education commission for the last two decades.

Singh adds since then, there has not been any research and analysis by eminent educators on the education system.

The FTU General Secretary further says it is unfortunate that we have had five Education Ministers and Permanent Secretaries each in the last 7 years and each time there was a new minister, he or she instituted changes according to what they thought was suitable.

We have sent questions to the Minister for Education, Premila Kumar. She is yet to respond.
