Help or shut up

Those that want to pitch in and help the Police Force combat sexual offences in Fiji must get into the ring and lend a hand, otherwise shut up.

Those are the words of Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua following comments by the Fiji Womens Rights Movement that police officers need gender sensitization training before commencing on the sexual offences campaign.

FWRM Executive Director, Virisila Buadromo had said that police officers need to know how to talk to women and children in a way that takes into account their realities and experiences before starting any form of community awareness or advocacy.

Commissioner Naivalurua said the campaign is not just about addressing women and children but males as well.

He said if Buadromo is consenting to offer training then she should come forward and offer it to the police, to do something substantive and help in the way Police are dealing with issues.

The Police Commissioner said if Buadromo wants to assist she should assist instead of just opening her mouth and talking from outside the ring.

FWRM said they are deciding on whether to make a comment on this issue.
