An academic has raised concerns about the impacts of the increasing number of squatter settlements on the environment and most importantly to the health of the people living in the settlements.
Dr Edward Anderson, a lecturer at the USP’s School of Marine Studies, told stakeholders at a National Environment Week workshop earlier this week, that a recent study carried out at Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa has shown that the lack of proper sanitation facilities has led to the increase in the risk of serious diseases, chronic infections and skin disorders.
Dr Anderson said a survey was carried out at the Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa and the results should have authorities concerned.
He added that he is happy that positive steps are being taken to address the issue, which will be a costly one.
