Govt dissolves Public Accounts Committee
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the government has dissolved the current Public Accounts Committee as a prelude to the resumption of Parliament after the General Election.

Sayed-Khaiyum said a new Public Accounts Committee chaired by the Opposition will be formed once Parliament resumes.

He confirmed that when the Public Accounts Committee sits, all the reports compiled by the Auditor General will be considered by the Committee and be tabled in Parliament.

The Attorney General said the new Committee will also be able to review the work of the old committee set up under the Audit (Public Accounts Committee) Regulations 2007.

He confirms that the office of the Auditor General is currently preparing and compiling all of the relevant reports for presentation to Parliament.

Sayed-Khaiyum said with the General Election taking place no later than September this year, it is important that the government steps up preparations for the transition to the new Parliament now.

In preparation for the new Parliament, various positions in the Parliament Secretariat will also be advertised in the coming week.

We will have more on this story later today.
