Girmit Day and Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day gazetted as public holidays in May

Two new public holidays, Girmit Day and Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day, have been gazetted by the Acting Minister for Employment, Filimoni Vosarogo.

Girmit Day is a new holiday while the coalition government is bringing back Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day after it was scrapped by the previous Bainimarama led government.

According to the gazetted 2023 public holidays, Girmit Day to mark the arrival of the indentured labourers from India on May 14th 1879 will be on Monday 15th May while Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day will fall on Monday 29th May.

The other holidays are Good Friday on Friday 7th April, Easter Saturday on 8th April, Easter Monday on 10th April, Prophet Mohammed's Birthday on Monday 2nd October, Fiji Day on Tuesday 10th October, Diwali on Monday 13th November, Christmas Day on Monday 25th December and Boxing Day on Tuesday 26th December.
