Former primary school teacher guilty of rape, defilement and abduction gets 16 years jail term

A former primary school teacher who has been found guilty of rape, defilement and abduction of a student from the same school has been sentenced to 16 years imprisonment.

The incidents happened in 2019 and the girl was 12 years at the time of the incident.

While sentencing the man, Justice Goundar says teachers hold a special position of trust in society adding parents trust teachers with their children.

Justice Goundar says there was significant planning by the man and he exposed the girl to pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases by having unprotected sex.

A non parole period of 12 years has been set.
