Five batches of mosquito eggs infused with Wolbachia bacteria received by World Mosquito Program

The World Mosquito Program has received 5 batches of mosquito eggs that are infused with the Wolbachia bacteria to help stop the spread of dengue fever, chikungunya and zika viruses.

This was confirmed by the Project Manager Fiji Aminiasi Tavui.

The Wolbachia bacteria is a naturally occurring bacteria in insects that stops the dengue, zika and chikungunya virus.

Tavui says the project aims to introduce Wolbachia infused male and female mosquitos between the Suva to Lami corridor as a start.

The project ends in December this year and the next phase begins next year for the western division.

Fiji has over 26 species of mosquitos and only one will be introduced to Wolbachia.

The first batch of mosquitos will be released on Monday in Tamavua.
