Fire partially destroys QVS dorm ahead of school’s 70th anniversary celebration

A fire has partially destroyed Queen Victoria School Verata House dormitory, a day before the school’s 70th anniversary celebration.

About 60 students have been impacted.

Permanent Secretary for Education, Selina Kuruleca says all staff and students are safe.

She says the fire started at around 3.30pm yesterday and from the Korovou Fire Station were able to contain it.

She says Ratu Kadavulevu School students stepped in to assist with mattresses while the affected students were accommodated at QVS.

Kuruleca says the schools 70th anniversary celebration will go on as planned.

She has also confirmed that National Fire Authority and the Fiji Police Force are investigating the cause of the fire.
