Fire claims woman's life as she reaches for husband's hand

The woman who passed away in a house fire in Vitogo, Lautoka this morning tried to grab her husband’s hand before she was lost in thick smoke inside her room.

Anil Anjani was trapped inside her own house when it was on fire at around 5 this morning.

A relative told Fijivillage that Anjani, her husband, their son and grandson were sleeping when the fire started.

Their son alerted other family members and they tried to escape through a window.

Everyone escaped except for the 61-year-old woman.

The National Fire Authority says the husband is admitted at the Lautoka hospital after he received serious injuries.

Police and the National Fire Authority say they have started their investigations to determine the cause of fire.

In another incident, a three‑bedroom house belonging to a 33‑year‑old man was destroyed in a fire at Lajonia in Labasa yesterday afternoon.

Police say when the man arrived home he saw smoke and attempted to put out the fire but could not save his house.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage as the investigations continue.
