Fiji wins Opening Pool Game in san Diego
The Digicel Fiji 7's team started its defense of the San Diego 7's on a winning note with a 26-7 victory over Australia.
Veteran Neumi Nanuku who played at play-maker led by example as he scored Fiji's opening try before half-back Emosi Vucago crossed for the second.
Setefano Cakau showed the Australians why he is rated as one of the best rovers in the IRB 7's series when he spilt the defense for winger Akuila Nawerecagi to score the 3rd try and for Fiji to lead 19-0 at half-time.
Australia came back strongly in the second half with a try, for the score-line to read 19-7 but Cakau increased Fiji's lead to 26-7 with a well deserved try in a move which saw all of the Fiji players involved starting from their own half.
While the side missed some tackles it was evident that coach Joe Savou has worked on the kick-offs where Vucago was out-standing and the forwards winning back quality ball to set up the backs.
Fiji's next pool game is at 11.18 this morning against West Indies before facing Samoa at 2.46pm. Fiji needs to win their remaining two pool games to avoid a quarter final with New Zealand.
Meanwhile, current IRB points table leader New Zealand are through to the quarter final of the San Diego 7's with their second win in the pool game.
The side thumped France 34-nil to book a spot in the play-off.
The Gordon Tietjeans coached side is now just a game away to create history by winning 34 games in a row.
Earlier on this morning the side defeated Wales 19-0.
New Zealand will meet up with either Samoa, Australia or Fiji in the quarter finals tomorrow.
In other results South Africa defeated USA 36-0 and Scotland edged France 19-12, England recorded the biggest score-line with a 48-0 win against Mexico, Argentina 22-19 Canada while Kenya beat Chile 38-0 this morning.
