As many Muslims are celebrating Prophet Muhammad's birthday today, the Fiji Muslim League says in a multicultural country like Fiji, fostering understanding and respect among people of different faiths is vital for social harmony and community development.

Fiji Muslim League Acting Administration Manager, Muhammad Shamim Ali says the birth of the Prophet Muhammad is a reminder of his teachings, character and the message of Islam where all Muslim’s gather in mosques for special prayers to commemorate the Prophet’s birthday.

Ali says Prophet Muhammad's birthday is also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, and is celebrated by Muslims around the world, including in Fiji that honours the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) who is the last prophet in a long line of prophets.

He says joint community service projects such as charity work or environmental clean-up initiatives provide opportunities for people of different faiths to work together towards common goals, building bonds of friendship and cooperation.

Ali adds by commemorating Prophet’s birthday, communities often engage in discussions and activities that focus on his role as a leader, moral guide and messenger of Islam.

He says religious scholars discuss the significance of the Prophet’s life, his teachings, and contributions to Islam so the attendees can follow the Prophet’s example in their daily lives.

He says families and communities gather for meals and share food with one another where communal aspect fosters unity and strengthens social bonds among Muslims.

He also says may this day inspire everyone to deepen the understanding of Islamic faith and to strengthen our bonds with one another, regardless of our backgrounds.

Meanwhile, national Miladun Nabi Jalsa will be celebrated at Churchill Park, Lautoka today.
