The Fiji National Sports Commission has ruled that the Fiji
Rugby Union Annual General Meeting held on the 31st of last month was unconstitutional as there was no quorum.
In a statement FRU Chairman, Filimoni Waqabaca said the board will have a General Meeting in the near future as the Fiji Rugby Union Constitution states that the quorum at a General Meeting of the Council Meeting shall be forty delegates of affiliated unions.
The Secretariat of the Fiji Rugby Union Council has confirmed, in writing, that the information previously provided that there was a quorum was in error and there was no quorum of forty delegates at the meeting.
Waqabaca said any resolutions and decisions made at the meeting held on the 31st of last month would be deemed to be null and void.
He also said that the FRU board elected in the Annual General Meeting in April last year is deemed to be the legal and official Board of the Fiji Rugby Union.
The board members that are holding office include Filimoni Waqabaca, Daniel Whippy, Mosese Taga, Doctor Esther Williams, Filimone Vatuvoka, Doctor Berlin Kafoa, Baljeet Singh, Napolioni Batimala and Carl Ngamoki‑Cameron.
When contacted by Fijivillage, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Peter Mazey opted not to make any comments.
Under the Fiji National Sports Commission Decree of 2013, the commission is to regulate all matters relating to sports in Fiji to ensure that all sports and elected officials comply with their constitutions, regulations and guidelines.
Meanwhile the Lautoka Rugby Union which moved the vote of no confidence against the board has today questioned how the AGM went ahead without a quorum.
The vote of no confidence was against FRU board members, Mosese Taga, Doctor Esther Williams and Filimoni Vatuvoka.
Lautoka Secretary Salesi Vulakoro said this has now become a joke and questions why the FRU appointed Francis Kean to chair the meeting if there was no quorum.
Vulakoro had earlier confirmed that the vote of no confidence was meant for the whole board however they were informed that they could not take out the nominees of the Prime Minister and the FRU trustees.
Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama was also appointed President of the FRU in the meeting held on the 31st of May.
