FRCA urges taxpayers to take advantage of amnesty period

People facing difficulties in paying their taxes have been urged to take advantage of the amnesty period which came into effect on the 1st of this month.

More than 8000 taxpayers currently owe the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority $50.3 million in taxes, out of which 56 percent are  companies, 42 percent are individuals and 2 percent are NGO’s and partnership.

FRCA Chief Executive Officer Jitoko Tikolevu has formally announced that no penalties will be charged on those individuals  who genuinely have difficulties in paying their tax liabilities.

Tikolevu stresses that only penalties are being waived and not the taxes.

The amnesty period will continue from now until 30th June and according to Tikolevu those who do not take advantage of the amnesty period will have to pay their penalties.

Tikolevu said all taxpayers who have fully accepted their tax liability as at 31st December, 2014 are eligible to have their penalties waived.

The program was announced by the Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum during the 2015 National Budget Announcement last year.
