FICAC is now investigating the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority after the Attorney General and Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum lodged a complaint with FICAC last Friday.
The complaint is in relation to the operational aspects of FRCA.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says after the complaint was lodged, FICAC subsequently sent out an investigation team to FRCA and seized some documents and various computers.
The Attorney General says he lodged the complaint after they were given access to an email that was sent out by the General Manager of the Customs Division in FRCA on the 30th of September.
He says there has been a number of allegations regarding VAT under declaration and the changing of the tariff.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says there have also been stories regarding how certain importers in Fiji are in cahoots with customs officers and are actually changing tariffs.
He says all customs officers should strictly adhere to non‑corrupt practices and make sure that there is no corruption.
He adds that we cannot have a critical arm of government apparatus which is FRCA not following proper standards.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says he will have a meeting with the FRCA board today to discuss the issue.
