FICAC investigates complaint regarding a mahogany company’s dealings

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption is now investigating a complaint regarding a mahogany company’s dealings.

FICAC confirmed that the investigation has commenced but the commission would not be able to release further details as the investigations are currently underway.

Meanwhile Sustainable Mahogany Industries Limited from Deuba is closing up its operation in Fiji and will move out by the end of October.

The company said that it will not make any comments on why it has decided to move out of the country.

It said that it had paid $7 million above the money paid for the mahogany logs between April 2010 to May this year.

About 85 workers will lose their jobs due to the company’s departure, and redundancy packages have been paid out.

The company also stressed that is it not under investigation.

It said that they decided not to renew their license when it expired in June this year.

Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said he will not comment as FICAC is investigating the complaint.

Sayed-Khaiyum had earlier told Fijivillage that the complaint on what is happening in the forest and outside the forest has been given to FICAC.

They will now await the investigation to be concluded.
