FCCC and Sanatan Sabha promote sustainable and safe Diwali

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission in partnership with the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, is continuing its annual Diwali initiative to promote sustainability, responsible consumption, and fairness in the marketplace.

FCCC say this year’s focus is on encouraging households and businesses to reduce their environmental impact during the festival.

They say the initiative promotes actions such as reducing single-use plastics, conserving water, using energy-efficient or solar lights, choosing local products, and supporting ethical businesses.

The FCCC also urges businesses to avoid greenwashing and ensure that environmental claims on products are honest and accurate.

CEO Senikavika Jiuta says the initiative highlights how cultural celebrations can drive positive environmental and social change.

She says Diwali is a time of light, reflection, and renewal, and their goal is to ensure that every Fijian consumer enjoys the season without exploitation.

She says that the FCCC will continue to monitor markets, checking regulated items such as ghee, oil, milk, and other commonly used products during this festive season, to ensure that traders are engaging in fair trading practices.

The FCCC is also urging all consumers to use eco-friendly fireworks and prioritise safety.

National President of the Sabha, Dhirendra Nand says this joint effort allows them to honour the true essence of Diwali, which of the victory of light over darkness, by shining a light on responsible living.

He says they aim to inspire communities to make sustainability a way of life, not just a festival message.

Diwali will be celebrated on Tuesday.
