Extension works at the Nausori Airport is expected to begin soon.

This has been confirmed by Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama at the Maha Devi Temple in Vuci, Nausori, when questioned by a resident to shine some light on the upgrade works of the Airport.

Bainimarama says for a long time the Fiji Airports Limited, Nausori landowners and the i-Taukei Land Trust Board have been talking about the extension of the airport.

The Prime Minister says just last week, he heard that a deal has been struck between the three parties.

Meanwhile the Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum had earlier highlighted in parliament that government is working to increase the length of the Nausori Airport runway with Fiji Airports Limited.

Sayed Khaiyum has stated that the Nausori Airport runway can only cater for 737‑800 aircrafts which deals with direct flights to Sydney and Auckland and is not operating at full capacity.

He says the ideal runway length which a 737 aircraft needs to operate at full capacity is 2,100 metres.

Sayed‑Khaiyum says the length of the runway at the moment is 1,868 metres and is 30 metres wide.

He had earlier highlighted that the expansion of the runway is expected to cost about $36 million.
