Education Minister maintains statement
The Minister for Education, Dr. Mahendra Reddy

The Minister for Education, Dr. Mahendra Reddy has issued a response to the statement which was offered by the Opposition on the removal of Fiji National University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ganesh Chand.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Reddy said that he maintains the previous statement which he made in a press conference.

Reddy who is also the Chairperson of the Fiji National University Council stated that the council had agreed in a meeting for a change in the Vice Chancellorship in FNU.

He said that following discussions in the Council meeting for a re-direction and consolidation of the University’s strategic focus, the Chairperson of the University Council, and the Vice Chancellor had mutually agreed that the Vice Chancellor's employment contract be brought to an end before the expiry.

The statement which was issued by the Opposition had raised questions about Government’s interference in employment issues as well as the blatant disregard and violation of constitutional rights, employment and natural justice.

The Opposition called on the Minister of Education, Dr Mahendra Reddy to assign a special commission to look into the issue.

They had also claimed that Dr. Ganesh Chand’s removal had nothing to do with FNU’s Strategic plan and future direction.

Meanwhile, Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Ian Rouse has been appointed as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Fiji National University.
