Trump has managed to get 278 electoral college votes while Hillary Clinton has 228 votes.

The target to win the US presidency was 270 electoral votes.

The Republican took the key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, as he marched towards the White House.

In an extraordinary development, Hillary Clinton did not initially concede the election ‑ but then later called Trump to congratulate him on his victory.

The Republican surpassed expectations and confounded pollsters in Florida, where Clinton was expected to win following a surge in the Hispanic vote.

Hillary Clinton’s hopes of a swift victory faded as the Republican picked up a series of states early on and maintained his momentum.

President-elect of America, Donald Trump told supporters in New York that he is ready to work with everyone to unite the country.

Trump says he will ensure that there is a better and brighter future for everyone in the US.

Losing Democrat Hillary Clinton says she hopes Donald Trump will be a successful president for all Americans as she made her concession speech after the Republican's stunning election victory.

According to statistics released by CNN, 53% of men voted for Trump while 41% backed Clinton, 42% of women voted for Trump while 54% voted for Clinton, 58% of white voters supported Trump while 37% backed Clinton, 8% of black voters backed Trump while  88% voted for Clinton, 29% of Hispanics supported Trump while 65% supported Clinton.

Meanwhile US President Barack Obama who congratulated his successor in a phone call in the early hours of the morning, said it was "no secret" that he and Trump had pretty significant differences.
