Opening the Fiji Day Celebrations, Acting President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau urged the leaders of Fiji at Albert Park not to be selfish.
The Acting President also said there is an increase in the number of HIV cases in the country and so urged young people on the importance of using condoms after the first HIV case was reported in 1989.
Meanwhile, American President Barack Obama has conveyed his congratulations to the people of Fiji on her 39th Independence anniversary.
Obama said that Fiji and the USA both enjoy a friendship founded on the mutual commitments of the societies to peace, freedom, the rule of law and democratic ideals.
Obama said that it is through the shared commitment to these ideals that the friendship between both the countries has developed strongly over the years.
He said as Fiji celebrates its Independence Day, the United States continues to stand with the people of Fiji in their pursuit of a brighter future.
