Depression intensifying as it heads towards Fiji group

The Nadi Weather Office has confirmed a tropical depression to the North-East of Fiji lying close to Rotuma is moving South-West towards the Fiji group.

A flash flood warning is also in force for low lying areas as heavy rain is forecast for most parts of the country today.

The weather office said strong east to northeast winds 37 to 55 km/hr with gusts to 75 km/hr over Taveuni, Vanua Levu and Northern Lau group is expected from tomorrow morning.

Acting Director, Alipate Waqaicelua there is a great possibility that the depression will form into a tropical cyclone in the Fiji group but we would like to advise people that the effects of the system will be felt from late today.

Waqaicelua said people need to take all precautionary measures now and not to leave it to the last minute.

On its current path, the first places to get affected would be the northern division, northern Lau and Yasawas while other places will start getting heavy rain with winds picking up by later today.

Stay with us for continuous updates on the weather situation throughout today.
