Death Penalty law to be removed from the RFMF Act
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

The government has brought in a bill in parliament to amend the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Act which will remove the death penalty that still exists in the military law.

While tabling the motion for the bill to be debated and voted upon by parliament tomorrow, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that this is part of the undertaking given to the United Nations.

He said this needs to be done urgently as the human rights periodic review will be done next month.

Opposition MP, Tupou Draunidalo then raised the issue and said that this should not be rushed.

She also said that harsh punishment should be left in the RFMF Act.

The motion has been passed for the debate and vote on the bill to remove the death penalty from the RFMF Act.
