Cultural competence key to students' success in healthcare-Samoa High Commissioner

For students pursuing careers in healthcare, embracing cultural diversity is not just an added benefit but a crucial component for success which improves the quality of care provided.

This message was delivered by Samoa's High Commissioner to Fiji, Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia, during a flag-raising ceremony at Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

The High Commissioner says cultural competence is essential for future healthcare professionals and the ability to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds.

He encourages students to embrace their own cultural heritage while learning from the broader Fijian and Pacific cultures surrounding them.

He says as future doctors, nurses, researchers and policymakers, may you carry forward not only knowledge and technical skill but also a spirit of cultural humility, respect and compassion.

Elisaia says these qualities are as important as any prescription for success in the medical field.

He says by integrating cultural competence into their education, students are better equipped to serve their communities with compassion and effectiveness.
